The history of Adega Cartuxa was shaped by Vasco Maria Eugénio de Almeida, one of the greatest patrons and philanthropists of the 20th century in Portugal. He invested in the diversification of agricultural production, revitalizing the winegrowing activity once driven by his grandfather, Carlos Maria, and promoted the planting of an extensive olive grove, which became, in the words of the region’s own workers, the “factory” they had never had before.
